Смежные биты или октеты в кодовой последовательности, которые декодируются как целое и которые либо представляют абстрактное значение, либо содержат информацию, необходимую для успешного декодирования, либо представляют то и другое.
"То и другое" часто встречается в традиционных протоколах.
